This underground mining site offers a tour of authentic, converted galleries and an exhibition retracing over 1,000 years of coal mining on the Matheysin plateau.
The La Motte d’Aveillans anthracite mine, created under Napoleon 1st and closed in 1956, was revived in 1986 by the Association Sauvegarde et Mise en Valeur du Patrimoine Mottois. Several ore extraction galleries have been restored and opened to visitors. A guide takes you through authentic galleries, where you will follow two centuries of mining, its techniques, equipment from different eras and the working conditions of the « gueules noires » on the Matheysin plateau, where mining ended definitively in 1997. In the exhibition rooms of the LA MINE IMAGE Museum, you can discover the lamp room, the hanging room, the trades of the day, the social world of the mine and the daily life of the miner, as well as magnificent minerals in the « treasure » room.
Visits depart at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m.
The Petit Train departs from La Mure at 10:45 p.m. and returns to the Museum La Mine Image at La Motte d’Aveillans station at 2:20 p.m., allowing passengers with a DUO « Train + Musée de la Mine Image » ticket to get off and enjoy a guided tour of the underground galleries. Passengers can then take the next train out of the museum at 5:30pm to La Mure.
